Deserving sports clubs and young sports people from across Leicester and Leicestershire converged on the King Power Stadium recently to celebrate the Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund's 50th award and the third anniversary of the charity.

The Fund has committed more than £1 million to date to projects helping young people, particularly with some level of disadvantage, develop confidence and life skills through sport. Celebrity guests and Olympic triathlon medal winners Alistair and Jonny Brownlee also joined the party.

Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball Club were named the worthy 50th award recipient at the event with a £31,300 Fund grant. The award will help the club, based at the Leicester Community Sports Arena, buy more specialist sports equipment and create a new storage area. Leicester Cobras Treasurer Ian Trott said; "We are delighted to be the 50th award recipient. This is an absolute lifeline for the club and will help us in so many different ways. A lot of our equipment is well past its best years and it will help us to update it. We will also be able to get to many more community events and support young players with travelling to training. For many of our members the club is a very important part of their lives that helps them develop new skills and make new friends."

Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund Chairman Stephen Draisey said; "A lot of our staff were very inspired by London 2012, both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games saw how sport can transform lives. We look for projects that are using sport to help youngsters, who have often not had the best start in life, to gain life skills through sport and fulfil their potential. The first three years have been a great journey for us and we have felt privileged to see all the fantastic work that so many sporting organisations and sporting volunteers do in the Leicestershire area. Leicester is well known for its great professional sports clubs but there is also an amazing sporting volunteer army out there doing outstanding work."

The Fund offers financial support but also encourages Samworth Brothers employees to get involved with clubs as mentors and helpers.  A team of Samworth Brothers development chefs recently hosted a cookery workshop for the Move charity based in Leicester, which helps young people with cancer keep fit and enjoy sport. The Fund is also working with a number of its clubs and organisations to develop a Samworth Brothers' sponsored employment programme for youngsters wanting to get into work.

Speakers at the 50th award event included Karl Brown, organiser of the Leicester Warriors Basketball Club, the Fund's first award recipient.  "The Sports Opportunity Fund has been great for our club.  The support, guidance, and genuine help we receive has helped us to grow and increase in numbers, while also contribute in doing some great work across our community, in Leicester", said Karl.
