P. H. Hull & Sons is a waste management and recycling company specialising in the food sector. Based near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, it is a family-run business with four generations of experience. It started working with Samworth Brothers in 1995 when it was appointed by Walkers Charnwood Bakery. By 1998, it was providing waste management services to all nine Samworth Brothers’ bakeries across Leicester and Melton.
When we first started working with P. H. Hull & Sons, each bakery had just one or two waste streams. Now, due to the commitment of both the site and P. H. Hull & Sons to recover materials for reuse and recycling, they all have seven or eight, with a purpose-made skip for each stream. P. H. Hull & Sons visits each site every day with a small volume recycling lorry. All recycling is undertaken within the county, to keep everything local. They provide each site with a detailed waste report every Monday which keeps us up to speed with our progress.
P. H. Hull & Sons undertook a major education and advisory programme with us, working alongside our hygiene teams, making modifications to our production lines and improving our waste handling techniques. In 2010, all nine bakeries in Leicester and Melton Mowbray achieved zero to landfill. Since then, these nine businesses have succeeded in diverting 129,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.
“For all nine bakeries to attain zero to landfill is a tremendous achievement and we owe that to the expertise, and partnership approach of P. H. Hull & Sons. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
Deborah Carlin, Group Sustainability Advisor, Samworth Brothers
