Reduced gas usage at Walkers Deli & Sausage Co

Our investment in bespoke equipment, often designed in house, ensures we are one of the most efficient and largest producers of premium natural cased sausage in the world.

Established in 1996, Walkers Deli & Sausage Co is a leading manufacturer of premium sausages and traditional hams.

Our investment in bespoke equipment, often designed in house, ensures we are one of the most efficient and largest producers of premium natural cased sausage in the world. Our skills in curing, decorating, flavouring and glazing natural hams have also led to our growth in the premium hams sector.

The challenge

Walkers Deli & Sausage Co is committed to reducing its environmental impacts and we achieved the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems, ISO14001, in 2012. This has provided the business with a platform for continuous improvement and recently we identified an opportunity to reduce our gas usage. This was through the installation of a new design hot well system on our existing hot water boiler. The challenge was to maintain a consistent hot water supply to the factory whilst reducing the amount of gas used – and to achieve this without any interruption in service to the users.

How the challenge was overcome

The Site Services Engineering Team, Supervisor and an external contractor looked at the original design of the hot well and agreed on a new system design that would both deliver the required supply and greater efficiencies. This was done by adding a number of ancillary pieces to the system which captured all the waste condensate and used optimised steam injection to reduce energy demand on the system. Purely by using an ultra-efficient hot well, the boiler water did not require as much heating to achieve the temperature required in the bakery, and so used less gas.
