Technical Process Manager

Start date: August 2006
Location: Callington, Cornwall

“I graduated from Plymouth University with a BSc (Hons) in Food Science and Nutrition in 2006 and got my first job as a microbiologist. This mainly involved testing food samples to check if they were safe. I soon realised this kind of role was not for me. I wanted to enter the food industry so I joined one of Samworth Brothers' companies in Cornwall as a Technical Administrator.
After a year, I became a Specifications Technologist where I wrote all the customer specifications for our products. I was also involved in other product-related activities such as the packaging and documentation.
About six years ago, I was promoted to Quality Systems Manager. We dealt with a number of different customers, so this was a very diverse and interesting role. I really enjoyed the variety of it, where no two days were ever the same.
I have been on a number of training courses during my time with Samworth Brothers, including six customer specification courses, a labelling and legislation course and an internal auditing course. I have also attended two courses run by one of our retail customers at their headquarters in London: one on allergens and one on hygiene.  The hygiene course was a full week and so I learned a great deal.

Recently I was promoted to Technical Process Manager, this meant I kept half of my original role of managing the specification technologists and also took over the managing the process team. I love my new role as I get to spend more time in the bakery and really get involved with launching products.

I have been with the company since 2006 and it’s a great place to work – everyone is friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful.”
