Energy reduction at Melton Foods

Established in April 1998, Melton Foods is a purpose built bakery producing a wide range of sandwiches for the UK’s major retailers.

We produce high quality products in the Good to Go Sandwich range, along with Waitrose Café, Entertaining and Party Foods categories.

Our technical integrity, flexibility and manufacturing excellence have enabled our business to grow and contribute positively to the local Melton Mowbray community.

The team began by focusing on smaller wins, such as introducing an energy notice board to share information with staff, encouraging behaviour changes by switching machines off during break times, optimising running times on equipment, improving planned and preventative maintenance schedules on air leaks and power factor correction. Other measures implemented included installation of energy efficient lighting and trip lighting, along with larger projects such as upgrading the air handling units for greater control and optimisation of temperature throughout the bakery. A more efficient air compressor was installed and an upgrade of the chillers was also undertaken.
Introduction 26% reduction in energy consumption in relative terms over 12 months
Melton Foods is dedicated to improving its environmental impacts and, over a period of 12 months, we have been working hard on reducing energy consumption across the bakery. We wanted to change the way we think about - and use - energy, focusing on processes and behaviour around energy consumption and management. With full support from the MD, an energy project team was created to oversee the projects and report on results along the way. In addition, the Production Director, Engineering Manager and bakery team leaders were fully involved.
How the challenge was overcome 749 tonnes of CO2 saved
