Around 1.5 million children in England are eligible for free school meals. That can make the school holidays difficult for some families with extra food costs.
We’ve helped to bridge that gap working with partners on holiday meals projects. We joined up with Leicester City Council and Leicester City Football Club on a holiday food programme to support children in Leicester who normally have a free school meal. The programme provided families with all the ingredients they need to make five tasty lunches at home over a half term holiday, together with simple instructions for making the meals.
The Samworth Brothers team was provided with the recipe cards for the five meals. Samworth Brothers distribution and business development teams then worked closely with supply partners to deliver nearly 14,000 food boxes to 109 schools across Leicester. More than 300 pallets of food were broken down into 450,000 single units and packed into mixed food parcels for each child at our Samworth Brothers Supply Chain distribution centre in Leicester. Then the Samworth Brothers Coldcall van fleet and Samworth Brothers Supply Chain made a total of 125 delivery drops.
During a previous Easter holiday Samworth Brothers helped Leicester City Council provide free school lunches to over 3,000 eligible children. Our food-to-go businesses donated loaves, both for families to use at home and to make sandwiches for children attending camps. Meat was provided by Walkers Deli & Sausage Co. while herbs and spices, sandwiches and paid lunch bags were donated too. Teams from Coldcall, Fresh Food For Now Company and Group Commercial all helped to deliver fresh items every day.
