Laboratory Manager

Start date: March 2002
Location: Callington, Cornwall

“My first introduction to Samworth Brothers was when I was a student. I worked in the packing department of at one of the sites in Cornwall. I was taking a GNVQ in Science and a BTEC in microbiology at Plymouth College of Further Education.

Whilst still at college, I joined Westward Laboratories as a Laboratory Analyst in 2002, undertaking the microbiological analysis of food products, swabs and water. My role changed in 2005 when I became a Senior Analyst. At this point, I became responsible for staff training and started to get involved with method validation.

My first management role was in 2007 when I covered maternity leave for the Microbiology Manager. Two years later I became Assistant Laboratory Manager and my current role is Laboratory Manager. In this role, I am responsible for the day to day operation of the laboratory and supporting the General Manager in running the business as a whole.

What I enjoy most about my job is the diversity. I am lucky enough to be involved in all areas of the business which keeps me very busy! I enjoy problem solving and working towards improving systems and increasing efficiency. I have completed some large validation projects over the years which are challenging but very rewarding when you see the hard work pay off.

In my time here I have completed various science related qualifications such as a food safety management course. I have also taken the Institute of Leadership & Management’s Level 5 in Business Management & Leadership and Internal Leadership courses.

We have a good team at Westward – the people here help make it enjoyable.”
