“I graduated from York University with a Masters in Chemistry and joined as a graduate trainee. We are given four six-month placements over the course of our two years as a trainee and my first placement was with Walkers Deli Technical where I worked as a Technical Services Assistant.
My job was to check and review the specifications of the raw materials we buy in and then write specifications for the final product we send to customers. I was also given a project to review microtesting to see if there is a more efficient way of doing things so that we don’t overtest or overlook anything.
My next placement will be with Melton Technical in Melton Mowbray. I know I will be given a two-month project there that will let me see the whole scope of the technical department. After that I will be given a role that best suits me.
In October, the eight Samworth Brothers’ graduate trainees went on a three-day leadership and management course in Wales, where we joined graduate trainees from other outside companies. I found it really valuable to see how other people think about problems and how to work as a team.
As a graduate trainee, I am assigned a mentor who gives me lots of great advice. For example, I can tell her the kind of things I’m interested in, and she explains what my options are and the type of role that would be good for me. I love the variety of working in a group like Samworth Brothers. I really appreciate the opportunity of working in an organisation where you can gain experience in different companies and different working environments.”
