DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY: HOW SAMWORTH BROTHERS SUPPLY CHAIN IS CUTTING CARBON AND LEADING CHANGE

Samworth Brothers Supply Chain (SBSC) is taking ambitious steps to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and set a new benchmark for responsible logistics. As one of the UK’s top three chill consolidators, SBSC operates a fleet of 250 trailers and 125 units from its main hub in Leicester and outbases in Penrith, Bristol, and Callington.
In 2019, SBSC benchmarked its carbon output at over 29,000 tonnes and committed to a long-term reduction strategy. The journey began with a focus on fuel efficiency, aiming to reduce miles per gallon (MPG). With 90% of its fuel consumption concentrated in its fleet, SBSC has invested heavily in training drivers through the Samworth Brothers Academy, utilising advanced telematics and optimising vehicle utilisation. This initiative alone is projected to save 6,000 tonnes of carbon by the end of 2025.
SBSC has also implemented targeted investments in its fleet. Since March 2024, all trailer fleets from the Leicester hub have been running on either electric power or hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), resulting in a further 2,000-tonne reduction in carbon emissions. The company has also integrated 10 electric-powered trailers, with plans to add five solar electric units.
Additionally, the Leicester hub operates six electric units for short “factory clear” shunts of four to 18 miles, aiming to achieve emission-free operations in the area. SBSC has also invested in nine liquid natural gas (LNG) units for key routes, with expected carbon savings of 1,000 tonnes by the end of 2025.
Overall, by the close of 2025, SBSC is on track to reduce its carbon output by nearly one-third, saving 9,000 tonnes of CO2. And with further plans to cut another 5,000 tonnes in the next five years, the company is solidifying its role as a leader in sustainable logistics within the UK food supply chain.
