Supporting The Countryside Kitchen through the Community Opportunity Fund

The Samworth Brothers Community Opportunity Fund has recently made an award to The Countryside Kitchen, a working farm-based classroom offering hands-on food, nutrition and cooking education for young people.

Located just outside Leicester and run by farmer and food educator Milly Fyfe, The Countryside Kitchen aims to help children understand where their food comes from through immersive, field-to-fork learning. Sessions include seasonal cooking, practical food education, time spent outdoors and wellbeing-focused activities that bring nature and food together.

The project works with schools, community groups and families, with a particular focus on supporting disadvantaged young people who may have limited access to fresh, healthy food or rural experiences.

A portion of the funding from the Community Opportunity Fund will be used to cover transport costs, helping school groups from Leicester and Melton Mowbray travel to the farm and take part in the programme.

Community Opportunity Fund Trustees Jane Nickerson and Karen Holdsworth recently visited the farm to meet Milly, learn more about the project and see first-hand the positive impact it has on the children who attend.

The Countryside Kitchen is a wonderful example of how local initiatives can help young people build confidence, learn new skills and develop a stronger connection to the food they eat.
