Helping more young people discover table tennis in St Austell
More children and young people across St Austell are discovering an inclusive and enjoyable way to stay active, build confidence and make new friends.
With a £9,700 award from the Samworth Brothers Community Opportunity Fund, St Austell Table Tennis Club has been able to bring new opportunities into local schools and strengthen its connection with the wider community.
The funding has provided partner schools with high-quality table tennis tables, bats and balls. Pupils are now using the equipment during breaktimes and lunchtimes, creating active and welcoming spaces where children of different ages and abilities can play together.
For some pupils, it has offered an alternative to more traditional team sports and the chance to discover an activity in which they feel comfortable and confident.
Teachers have reported strong engagement, with children regularly choosing to play during the school day. The sessions naturally encourage positive interaction, respect, teamwork and healthy competition.
The impact is already extending beyond the school gates. After being introduced to table tennis at school, a number of pupils have attended coaching sessions at St Austell Table Tennis Club and become regular Friday evening members.
The award has also enabled the club to invest in recording and live-streaming technology. Coaches can use match footage to help players understand their technique, track their progress and receive more personalised feedback.
Matches can now be streamed online too, allowing parents, grandparents and other relatives who cannot attend in person to watch and celebrate the players’ achievements from home.
During a recent visit to the club, pupils from St Mewan Community Primary School enjoyed a fun after-school table tennis session and were delighted to receive a trophy.
Craig Mehew, Development and Welfare Officer at St Austell Table Tennis Club, said: “The funding has not simply provided equipment; it has created opportunities, removed barriers to participation and helped establish a sporting environment where every child can feel welcome, valued and capable of succeeding.
“Children who may never have discovered table tennis are now playing regularly, schools have gained valuable sporting resources, families are becoming more engaged, and young people are developing confidence, friendships and healthy lifestyles.”
The equipment will continue to benefit children across St Austell and the surrounding area for years to come, helping more young people participate in sport, feel part of their community and discover their potential.
