The new dishes we devise are tested by independent taste panels made up of consumers who shop regularly at our retail customers.
The people in our Research & Development department who create our new recipes are all trained chefs with a restaurant background.
We use 100% Aberdeen Angus beef in our Tesco Finest cottage pies. The fine marbling of fat in the beef melts when it’s cooked to give it a delicious succulent flavour. All the meat we buy comes from cattle farms that meet the strict welfare and quality standards on beef.
We dice fresh onions and slowly cook them until they are soft and all the natural sweetness has been released. To this we add celery, carrot, beef stock, gravy browning, salt and pepper. We then simmer all the ingredients gently with the minced meat for just over an hour.
We only use King Edward potatoes in our cottage pie as they are the best variety at producing a light and fluffy mash. We steam the potatoes, mash them, and then slowly blend in cream and butter. A parsley crumb is added to give the topping a tasty crunch.
We specify that all the Aberdeen Angus beef, King Edward potatoes, butter and cream we use in our Tesco Finest cottage pie are British. Each day, our Quality Assurance team taste-tests to ensure the pies that leave the bakery are of the highest quality.
