Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
When I was researching the company prior to my interview, what stuck out most to me was the business’s commitment to people, both inside and out of the Group through charity, learning schemes, training and progression opportunities.
What do you enjoy most?
I enjoy the variation most I think. Every day as part of the team is honestly completely different. It doesn’t matter how many times you come through the door, there’s always something new to challenge you.
What is a typical week like?
In the engineering department, every week is different. One day you could be welding, another programming. Half the day could be spent investigating a spurious electrical fault, the other working to repair a complicated mechanical issue.
What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming an apprentice?
Get involved. Stay proactive. Make your name heard. Challenge in the right way. Ask questions. Remember that your input is valuable. Most importantly though, work safe.
What has been the single biggest learning or highlight?
Teaching myself to use my emotions effectively. You have to remember to stay calm, take a moment and reflect on the difficult situations you may fall into and think about how you can best solve them.
How has your career progressed?
In terms of my core skills, I’ve now completed one-half of my apprenticeship’s diplomas. That means I am now at Level 2 which has given me a solid foundation of practical and theoretical knowledge to use when I need.
