“Before Samworth Brothers I was pursuing my athletic career and had just signed for the Tyrell’s premiership women’s rugby team, Worcester Warriors. I joined as a trainee butcher and part of the first intake in the new butchery school set up by Walkers Deli & Sausage Co. This was a comprehensive six-month butchery training programme where I learned every step of the process, including curing, slicing and packing.
After successfully completing the course, I was given a job on the paceline – that’s the conveyor belt that the pork legs pass on for each designated job. My specific role is to debone and trim the legs.
I’m given every opportunity to learn from the other more experienced butchers and I’m gaining important knowledge about different areas of the factory operations.
I’m now able to help newer butchery school trainees progress through the same process I went on and I’m able to share insights of my own experience with them.
The next step for me is that I’m going to be studying to gain a Butchery Level 2 Apprenticeship qualification. But I’m not just learning important butchery skills here at Walkers Deli & Sausage Co, I’m also building effective workplace relationships.
Looking ahead, I’ve got my sights on higher positions within the company and would be very interested in training other potential butchers. It’s the genuine support and care that everyone at Samworth Brothers puts into their job that pushes me to aspire for higher roles. I know that, if I demonstrate initiative, apply myself, and show I am prepared to work hard, then Samworth Brothers will enable me to reach my full potential.”
